With the growing demand for electric power due to trends in AI and plans to “De-Carbonize the grid”, there is a need to integrate more renewable generation and storage technologies into the electric grid and build increased infrastructure to support increased electrical demand.  CSA is well positioned to capitalize on these trends, and we are seeking to hire a Senior Electrical Engineer – Substation and Protection to join our growing business.

Responsibilities:
In this role, you will lead substation design and protective relay replacement projects.  The position reports to the engineering manager.  You will be working with structural engineers, designers, and equipment packagers on the following types of projects:
  • Medium/High Voltage Utility point of interconnection designs for Solar, Battery Storage, and other Distributed Energy Resources.  This includes substation designs for transmission level interconnections as well as overhead pole line and switchgear designs for distribution level interconnections.
  • Develop New and Retrofit Substation Designs for large facilities, including data centers, power generation facilities and other campus type facilities.
  • Develop designs to replace obsolete electromechanical relaying systems with new numerical relay systems.
  • Develop designs for control and protection schemes; support programming and testing.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Serve as lead electrical engineer and technical point of contact for substation and protective-relay replacement projects.
  • Plan and execute projects from field investigation and conceptual design through issued-for-construction documents and project closeout.
  • Lead the preparation and review of substation one-line and three-line diagrams; protection and control schematics; relay elementary and logic diagrams; AC and DC control-power diagrams; panel layouts; wiring diagrams; cable schedules; point-to-point diagrams; equipment specifications; and grounding, conduit, cable-routing, and physical substation drawings.
  • Develop relay replacement designs using existing drawings, documented field conditions, utility standards, and operational requirements.
  • Oversee short-circuit, protection-coordination, DC control-power, and related engineering calculations.
  • Supervise and provide technical direction to electrical designers assigned to projects.
  • Review drawings and calculations for technical accuracy, consistency, constructability, and compliance with client standards.
  • Coordinate with clients, utilities, manufacturers, contractors, testing firms, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Support procurement by preparing specifications, reviewing vendor proposals, and evaluating equipment submittals.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers and contribute to company design standards and procedures.
  • The position will be at our Brookfield, CT office.  Travel to projects sites within the NYC Tri-State Area is expected approximately 2-4 days per month.  Overnight travel will be limited.

Requirements:
  • 6-12 Years of Relevant Electrical Engineering Experience.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Ability to lead designers and coordinate with other professionals to develop electrical schematics and physical plan and section view drawings.
  • Four-Year Engineering Degree from ABET accredited school.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Legally authorized to work in the US.
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues and customers is essential.
  • Ability to safely access and work within substations, generating facilities, and active construction sites.

Preferred Qualifications:
Licensed Professional Engineer in any U.S. state.          

Expected Salary Range:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $130,000–$170,000 per year. The actual starting salary will be based on the candidate’s experience, technical capabilities, professional licensure, and ability to independently lead projects. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus and a benefits package that includes health insurance, a retirement plan, paid time off, paid holidays, and reimbursement for professional licensing and continuing education.
